A beer after a hike is an official ritual …right?
How many times have you searched for some accommodation and thought to check if it has a bar or a pub next-door? Probably not that often, when you’re booking hotels it’s almost a given that there will be drinks on offer of some sort.
Adventure accommodation can be a bit different. Hostels, especially city ones, usually have a bar or are located in slightly more urban area so you can be fairly certain there will be somewhere to grab a drink nearby.
Bunkhouses on the other hand can be a very different experience.
On the plus side for people that like a beer (or few) after a good days hiking, there are lots of bunkhouses in the grounds of pubs either as part of the building or something that’s been added later. Other bunkhouses are based in (or near) villages – so you know there’ll be a nice ‘local’ just a short walk away. However at the other end of the spectrum you have bunkhouses that are located close to the middle of nowhere and if you want a drink you either have to bring it yourself or get a taxi (assuming there is a road of course!)
It’s not just for beer…
So we should clarify, for anyone not yet versed in the post-hike etiquette that it’s not always about grabbing a few beers. No, the real joy of the post-hike pub is that it’s a chance to sit down, rest your weary feet (hopefully by a nice open fire) with your friends and peers (or if you’re hiking alone – making new acquaintances ) and regaling tales of the days adventure and other tales of note! If you’re lucky, it’s also a pub that has a fine menu of hearty on offer and it’s an enjoyable way to refuel your aching limbs!
For many, the promise of an evening of fine food, drink and friends is the reward for a hard days hike.
Find a bunkhouse with a pub nearby
