Design the flag for Exmoor

Pen & pencils at the ready

Have you got a creative streak, fancy yourself as a bit of a designer or do you just love Exmoor and would like to contribute something unique? Now’s your chance… a competition has started to create an official flag for Exmoor! Exmoor will be the first area encompassing a national park to have its very own flag.

2014 marks the sixtieth anniversary of Exmoor National Park, so it’s the perfect time to launch a competition for all those who love this beautiful area. Inspiration for your flag designs can be drawn from Exmoor’s unique landscape, its windswept moors, ancient woods, valleys, farmland and coast or its indigenous wildlife.

The Exmoor Flag Competition will be free to enter and open to all. Young and old, amateur and professional, individually or as a group – all will be judged impartially and purely on merit, irrespective of artistic ability. School children will have exactly the same chance as experienced designers.

The winning design will be chosen by the public

Entry forms along with hints and design guidelines are available now on The Exmoor Flag website www.exmoorflag.co.uk and available in Exmoor National Park Centres and tourist information centres across North Devon and West Somerset.

The winning design will be chosen by public vote and registered with The Flag Institute, the organisation responsible for maintaining the national registry of United Kingdom flags.

The first round of judging will be conducted by a panel made up from a cross section of Exmoor people, The Flag Institute and the Exmoor Flag Project team. A shortlist of 4 designs will be put forward to a public vote and the winner will be announced in October. Along with receiving a prize unique to Exmoor, the winner will be presented with the first copy of the flag and have the honour of their creation being registered as the official flag for Exmoor, to be cherished forever more.

Throughout the competition the Exmoor Flag Project team will keep the public updated through the website, local media coverage, posters/flyers and via social media.

The Exmoor Flag Project (EFP) Team:
Tony & Ceri Keene and Edward & Julie Christian.

The Exmoor Flag Project (EFP) was set up by a group of 4 friends who are passionate about Exmoor and are enthusiastic about the creation of a flag for Exmoor. They are dedicated to managing the Exmoor flag design competition democratically and with the utmost integrity. “We believe that the Exmoor flag should be generated by Exmoor loving people, for the good of Exmoor to express pride in the community, celebrate heritage and culture of this corner of the country and to raise recognition and awareness of Exmoor nationwide.”

An official flag for Exmoor is a fantastic idea, and we hope that the other National Parks might follow suit! We’re great fans of Exmoor at Bunkr and cannot wait to see the flag designs. We might even break out our own coloured pencil sets too!
