What is the nations favourite outdoor activity?

We recently ran a competition to win a two night stay in a tipi in Mid Wales.

As part of the competition entry process we asked every one entering to tell us their favourite outdoor activity. With almost 600 entries to the competition from across Facebook, Twitter and bunkr.co.uk – we got a small taste of what the nation thinks.

For a bit of fun we thought we put all this data together, just like we did for your favourite national parks so we could see what were the most popular activities among everyone that entered the competition. It’s interesting to see what you all get up to in your spare time!

Take a look at the infographic below and see where your favourite outdoor activity comes in the rankings.

There are no surprises to see the hiking is at the top spot number one, aside from queueing, walking is definitely a top British pastime!

However it is a little surprising to see how far ahead it is of all the other activities. Hiking and walking has more votes than all the others combined. Also just a note here that within ‘hiking’ we included walking and rambling.

Dog walking camping and cycling are the closest ones following on from hiking and horse riding is pretty close behind those.

Of course it’s not all mainstream activities and it’s nice to see slightly unusual ones like stargazing, wild/outdoor swimming and wild camping getting their fair share of the votes.

What's the nations favourite outdoor activity?

The fact that hiking is top of the popularity chart on a website aimed at hikers looking for bunkhouses is not really a shock – but it’s heartening that so many of us enjoy some kind of outdoor activity. There are some really beautiful parts of our country and we should all make the effort to get out there and see them!

Just a few notes about the votes/data.
We combined a number of activities for example as we stated walking, rambling and hiking were all counted as hiking.
Diving, archery, abseiling and conventional sports were combined as adventure/sports
Picnics, BBQs, friends etc.. were grouped under picnics relaxing etc…

So if you mentioned a specific activity and it’s not listed we’ve combined them with a similar activity unless there were more than 3 votes for each.

What do you think..

Tell us your favourite things to do outdoors.. is hiking your first choice? Do you think there is a glaring omission form the chart… tell us in the comments below
