Bunkhouses for Stargazers
After a year of extensive trials around the world, it has been announced that the world’s first StarBunks will open for guests this summer in one of the UK’s Dark Sky Parks.
StarBunks are offering hostel and bunkhouse style accommodation with a new twist… you sleep on the roof! In a unique and brave idea, which will no doubt appeal to all budding astronomers, specially equipped bunkbeds are secured to the hostel roof offering an amazing and uninterrupted view of the night sky.
Each ‘bunkbed’ comes equipped with a host of extras to make the most of your night under the stars including a telescope, coffee or tea on tap (at a small extra charge) and a rain canopy.
Shirley Knot, the brains behind StarBunks said in a statement; “We are terribly excited, StarBunks is a new entrant into the accommodation market, offering a unique spin on a tried and tested model. Our specially designed beds located on TOP of our hostels offer a view of the stars that no other hostel …or even hotel, can match! We’ve chosen to open our first StarBunks in the UK this Summer. We’re working with the National Parks, and local councils to iron out some out some potential health and safety issues. I’m confident these problems will be resolved this week – with the first StarBunks opening in July 2015. My eventual plan is to have a least one StarBunks in every Dark Sky Park. The night sky is beautiful and and everyone should be able to enjoy it from the comfort of a bed”

Pricing for a StarBunk has been set at £75 per night including unlimited use of the telescope attached to the bed, an evening meal and cooked breakfast. There is no room service, but for a small extra charge each bed can have piped boiling water with an unlimited supply of tea and coffee. Others optional extras are rumoured to include a ‘bed belt’, similar to a car seatbelt but designed to stop you falling out of bed (it’s quite a drop) and an iPad or similar to keep you entertained on the occasiobal cloudy night.
So far their has been no mention which Dark Sky Park would be the first to get a StarBunks, but judging by the plans on display, if it’s a success we’ll all be able to lie under the stars soon.
